Background: Continuous input of antibiotics to the environment can cause many potential problems such as antibiotic resistance in pathogens. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare heterogeneous fenton process and adsorption process on magnetic nanocomposite for ciprofloxacin removal from aqueous solutions. Methods: This experimental study was conducted at the Hamadan University of Medical Science in 2014. The efficiency of magnetic nanocomposite for ciprofloxacin removal was assessed in a batch system considering 15-300 min reaction time, pH 4-10, 30-200 mg/L initial ciprofloxacin concentration, 1-3 g/L adsorbent and 5-25 mmol/L H2O2. Physical and structural characteristics of the synthesized adsorbent were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (FTIR) techniques.Findings: The maximum efficiency of heterogeneous fenton process and adsorption process was obtained at pH 4 and 7 in which the efficiency of ciprofloxacin removal was 95% and 87%, respectively. The equilibrium adsorption data was well fitted with Langmuir isotherm. The reaction rate had the best compatibility with pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Conclusion: With regards to the results, magnetic nanocomposite (Fe3O4/MWCNTs) can be considered as an acceptable adsorbent in heterogeneous fenton procces for ciprofloxacin removal from aqueous solutions.

Background: Due to the increasing incidence of cancer and toxicity of cisplatin, there have been many attempts to find new complexes with greater potency and less toxicity. Palladium (II) complexes can induce cell death and serve as good anticancer drugs with less toxicity than platinum (II) complexes. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the anti-cancer properties of a new synthetic complex of palladium [Pd (2-foran-2-yl) 1H-imidazo–[4, 5–f] (1, 10-phenanthroline)] and cell death mechanism induced by this complex in human chronic myeloid leukemia cell line-K562.Methods: This experimental study was conducted in the Vital Macromolecules laboratory of Kharazmi University in 2014. The K562 cells were cultured in the RPMI-1640 medium and were treated with different concentrations of the Pd (II) complex for 24 and 48 hours. Cell viability was measured using 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The mechanism of cell death induced by this complex was analyzed by flow cytometery using Annexin V and propidium iodide.Findings: In the MTT assay, the Cc50 value (50% Cytotoxicity Concentration) of the Pd (II) complex was 95 and 86 μM after 24 and 48 hours, respectively. The analysis of results for Annexin V antibody indicated that the cell death induced by the Pd (II) complex was mainly apoptosis. Conclusion: With regards to the results, it seems that this Pd complex and its analogues can be considered as a new drug for cancer treatment in the future.

Abstract:

Background: Tea is known as a source of fluoride that not only can prevent tooth decay but also can increase the risk of dental fluorosis in overuse or in combination with other sources of fluoride. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the fluoride concentration in three brands of green tea consumed in Iran. Methods: This experimental study was conducted in Qazvin University of medical Science during 2012. Three brands of green tea (bag type and packed type) were evaluated. Two bags of every bag type and two 1-gram samples of every packed type were selected. Each time, the samples were placed in 100 ml distilled boiling water and were restored in an incubator at 80oC. Three and ten minutes after tea brewing, the fluoride concentration of filtrated water was measured by chromatography and was recorded in milligram per liter. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA.Findings: The fluoride concentration in bag type green tea was more than packed type. The fluoride concentration was not different among three brands of green tea. The fluoride concentration after ten minutes brewing was not significantly different from the concentration after three minutes brewing. Conclusion: With regards to the results, it seems that green tea brand and the brewing time does not affect fluoride release. The fluoride release in bag type green tea is more than packed type.

Abstract:

Background: Dental age determination has been considered for malocclusion treatment planning by Orthodontists and Pediatric Dentists. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the correlation of dental age estimated by Demirjian and Moorrees methods with chronological age in the orthodontic patients. Methods: In this analytical study, 419 panoramic images of 6-15 years old orthodontic patients referred to School of Dentistry in Qazvin were assessed in 2013. Dental age was estimated by Moorrees et al. (1963) and Demirjian et al. (1973) methods through the calcification stages of the left mandibular teeth with the exception of the third molar. Data were analyzed using paired T-test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.Findings: Of 419 patients, 190 (45%) were male and 229 (55%) were female. The mean age was 11.26±2.47. Although there were positive significant correlations between the methods in all study subjects, the Moorrees dental age was significantly different from the chronological age in all age groups. The Demirjian dental age was significantly different from chronological age in the 6-year old age group and 7, 12 and 15-year old males. There were significant differences between the Moorrees and Demirjian dental age in all age groups. Conclusion: With regards to the results, it seems that the Moorrees method is not appropriate for Iranian population while the Demirjian method can be acceptable for estimation of dental age based on chronological age. Due to the overestimation found in the Demirjian method, exclusive tables must be prepared for Iranian population.

Abstract:

Hearing loss is one of the most common sensorineural disorders that occur in 1:1000. Mutation in the GJB2 (CX26) gene at the DFNB1 locus on chromosome 13q12 is the most important cause of congenital hearing loss. The aim of this study was to determine the hearing loss causative mutations in the GJB2 gene in a 37 year-old woman with non-syndromic congenital hearing loss. A compound heterozygous mutation (35delG/del120E) was found in the GJB2 gene. With regards to the variety of mutations in the GJB2 gene, screening the causative mutations of hearing loss is recommended for subjects referred to genetics counseling centers before marriage and pregnancy.
