Abstract:

Aims: Fusarium species are the most important group of fungi that produced a variety of mycotoxins which can contaminate food. The objective of the present study was presentation and identification of one isolate from Fusarium species belong to section of sporotrichiella, that recently isolated from stored wheat of Tehran province. Methods: This species isolated and purified by freeze blotter and single-spore method, respectively. Isolates cultured onto CLA, SNA, PDA and PSA. All microscopic and macroscopic characters studied. The DNA of this isolate amplified by PCR with F. sporotrichioides and F. langsethiae specific primers. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of isolate amplified, purified and sequenced using universal primers ITS4 & ITSS and the fraction of TEF-1a gene also using external and nested primers. Results: On the basis of morphology and ribosomal internal, transcribed spacer (ITS) classified as F. langsethiae but on the basis of partial translation TEF-1a gene grouped with F. sporotrichioides. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first report in Iran and Asia. Therefore, a largescale monitoring of these fungi and T-2 toxin on wheat in Iran is necessary.

Abstract:

Aims: Chlamydia and syphilis are two important diseases in adults that have sexual activity. Because of no statistics of sexual transmitted in military of Iran, we decided to show the prevalence of these two diseases in soldiers and to recommend prophylaxis as a health strategy for them. Methods: This is a cross-sectional systematic random study that conducted in 1041 soldiers in Tehran in 2008. They consented for study and signed end of question chart. Then, 5ml of blood sample took from each and assayed for syphilis with VDRL and for quantities of Chlamydia trochomitis IgG. High risk behaviors also suggested. Data analyzed with SPSS 13. Results: The mean age of samples was 21.4±1.9 years. 44.9% (467 person) had diploma and 89.1% (928 person) were unmarried. One person was VDRL positive (0.1 %) and 15 soldiers (1.4%) were positive for Chlamydia. Genital ulcer was positive in 20 soldiers (1.9%) and dysuria in 97 soldiers (9.3%). 20 soldiers (1.9%) had addiction and 218 soldiers (20.9%) smoked cigarettes. But, No one of these risk factors had any significant relation with Chlamydia infection (p>0.207).Conclusion: Prevalence of sexual transmitted disease is low, but high risk behavior such as sexual contact and unused of condom was high. Therefore, these high risk behaviors should be corrected.

Abstract:

Aims: Salmonellae infection is one of the most important food-borne diseases. Antimicrobial resistance is increasing among Salmonella spp. and causes significant therapeutic problems in the treatment of diseases caused by this organisms. The aim of current study was to determine the isolation rate and antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella enterica subsp. Enterica serovar typhimurium strains. Methods: Salmonella spp. strains were isolated from clinical cases from May 2007 to June 2008. The susceptibility of the isolates to eight antibiotics was determined according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Results: Among all Salmonella isolates, 21 (15.2%) strains were identified as Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar typhimurium. More than 66% of the strains were resistant to Chloramphenicol, 57.1% to Ampicillin, 23.8% to Co-trimoxazole, 14.3% to Neomycin, 9.5% to Nalidixic acid and no resistance reported to Ceftriaxone, Ciprofloxacin and Gentamicin. Conclusion: S. typhimurium is one of the most prevalent non-typhoidal Salmonella serovars circulating in Tehran. Ceftriaxone, Ciprofloxacin and Gentamicin were effective against Salmonella and can be considered for treatment of infections caused by this organism.
