The present study aims at investigating into the Devisia
Decomposition Methods as applied to the three energy carriers
including electricity; natural gas; oil derivatives and total energy
consumption in major Iranian industries in general. It also seeks to
analyze the production and structural factors and pure intensity
factor in the changes in the ultimate energy consumption from 1979
to 2001. The findings of the study show that production effect in
explaining the changes of electricity consumption, pure intensity
effect in explaining changes in natural gas consumption as well as
production effect and pure intensity in explaining the changes in
the consumption of energy carriers of oil and the whole energy use
played the dominant role respectively both before and after 1989.
Structural effects were shown, in all the four cases mentioned
above, to have a share, though a slight one, in explaining the energy
consumption behavior. Moreover, as to the consumption of the
carriers and that of the whole of energy in Iranian major
industries, the findings indicate that structural changes have led to
the reduction, however small of the consumption of energy.
