Abstract

Given the variability of financial performance and profitability of insurance companies, it is necessary to identify the factors that influence them. In this study the factors determining the financial performance of listed insurance companies in Tehran Stock Exchange between 2008 and 2013 is studied. A sample of nine insurance companies is used to test hypotheses using panel data multiple regression model. Results indicate that the relationship between debt ratio and return on assets is significant and negative, the relationship between fixed to total assets ratio and return on assets is significant and negative, and also the relationship between flexibility and the return on assets is not significant. The relationship between company size and return on assets is negative and significant and the relationship between company risk and return on assets is negative and significant. Based on the results the relationship between company loss ratio and return on assets is significant and negative and the relationship between written premium and return on assets is also significant and positive.
