Abstract

Objective: The objective of this paper is to investigate Incongruity appreciation in (girl and boy) pre-school Children’ s animated and non-animated pictorial Humor stories. There are various definitions of Humor. In the literature Humor is defined as Incongruity, fun laugh, joy, pleasure and good mood. Humorous is defined as everything which contributes to a person’ s having a good time. An aspect of Children’ s Humor development is the way they explain pictorial Humor. That is, pictorial Humor takes place in the development of Humor. In the literature on Humor it is customary to distinguish between three classical theories: The Superiority Theory, the Relief Theory and the Incongruity Theory. The three theories are usually seen as rivals, competing for the most plausible answers to questions like: “ Why do we laugh? “ , “ What is the nature of Humor? ” , or “ What does the comical consist of? ” The Incongruity Theory is the most popular of the three at present. Incongruity theory focuses on the cognitive elements of Humor. According to this approach, Humor involves the bringing together of two normally disparate Ideas, concepts, or situations in a surprising or unexpected manner. Methodology: The present study is methodologically descriptive. The participants in this study are 100 preschool Children aged 4-6. To do so, we showed the participants a part of Tom and Gerry Humor animation and a 6 levels picture with Humor concept of my daddy and I stories book. The present study is to investigate the answers of these two fundamental questions: what Incongruities do Children aged 4-6 appreciate in pictorial Humor stories? And what difference does gender make in their explanation of Humor appreciation on the basis of Incongruity theory? Pre-school Children can represent their emotions better than Children that they are before these ages; it is the primary reason that they had selected for this study. Findings: Based on the data analyzed in this study, the incongruities that Children appreciated in Tom and Jerry animation and the picture of my daddy and I stories can be broadly categorized into three categories: normal and abnormal-usual versus unusual-and predictable vs. unpredictable. These three categories of incongruities are the basic oppositions that Raskin puts into the semantic theory of Humor. In addition to these three categories of Incongruity, the contrast between two different entities, such as humans and animals, is also understood and expressed by Children. X2 Pearson shows that in pre-school ages, regarding appreciating pictorial Humor (animated and non-animated) no significant difference was observed between girls and boys. It seems that if meaningful difference exists between two sexes, it will reveal itself after pre-school ages. Conclusion: The pre-school Children are capable of recognizing Incongruity in Pictorial stories (animated and non-animated) and they can appreciate and present story funny situations via watching pictures. They can appreciate incongruities in a laughable picture by comparing that picture with their mind schemata.
