INVESTIGATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY CONDITION OF ZAHEDAN SCHOOLS IN 2014

Abstract

 Background and Aims: SCHOOLS, as a reliable places play an important role in educating students. If health principles are ignored in SCHOOLS, students will be likely to suffer from different kinds of health problems. Thus, according to the importance of the matter, this study aimed to determine the hygienic and SAFETY status of Zahedan SCHOOLS in 2014.Materials and Methods: In this descriptive and cross-sectional study a Survey on census methods was used at 220 SCHOOLS under the investigation. For data collection, the SCHOOLS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH assessment form, which was based on the ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH regulation of the Ministry of Health, was used. The forms were filled out by trained experts. Finally, the achieved data was statistically analyzed using SPSS software applying the chi-square statistical test at the significant level of 0.05.Results: the least required area per student had been observed In 32% of SCHOOLS. The required green area per capita is 0.5 m2 whereas this requirement had been satisfied in none of these SCHOOLS. 62.5% of SCHOOLS had access to healthy potable water. In 27% of SCHOOLS only one toilet was provided for 40 students. In 75% of SCHOOLS sewage disposal system was hygienic. 70% of SCHOOLS had hygienic dust bin.35.5% of SCHOOLS followed the standard time lag between the emptying and washing the dust bins. considering the SAFETY issue, most of the problems were related to the emergency staircase and the fire extinguisher equipments.Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, most of the SCHOOLS had a relatively undesirable hygienic status regarding the ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH regulation and it requires more attention of the authorities in charge.
