Abstract

Introduction: The aim of the study was to determine the HEALING effect of SALAVADORA PERSICA plant extract on skin wound using an experimental animal model. Methods: A skin wound was created on the back of 80 mature male RATs randomized into two groups; while the lesions of control group were covered once daily with placebo cream, those of intervention group were covered with cream based drug including extract of "Salavadora Persica" plant. Ulcers were examined regarding infiltRATion RATe of neutrophils on the first day, macrophages and lymphocytes on the third day, lymphocytes and fibroblasts, number of new geneRATed vessels and HEALING on the fifth day, collagen aggregation, wound HEALING and size on the fourteenth day, and finally HEALING and SCAR status twenty one days after wounding. Results: After twenty one days, the SCAR mean score (± standard deviation) was 8.13±2.78 in control and 3.04±1.79 in intervention group (P<0.001). On the fourteenth day, mean score of wound HEALING were 0.76±0.67 and 1.65±0.48 (P=0.02) respectively and mean score of collagen aggregation and wound size (mm) were 1.6±0.5 and 2.7±0.34 (P=0.002) and 1.2±0.34 and 0.25±0.23 (P=0.001) respectively. InfiltRATion RATes, number of new geneRATed vessels and HEALING score on 5 and 21 days after wounding were not different significantly. Conclusion: Comparing two groups showed absolutely better conditions in intervention group regarding their collagen aggregation, wound size and SCAR scores after 14 and 21 days. In addition, HEALING in intervention group was better on the fourteenth day. SALAVADORA PERSICA showed good effect on HEALING trend.
