Abstract

This study is aimed at estimating the size of UNDERGROUND ECONOMY of IRAN. Furthermore, the factors causing UNDERGROUND ECONOMY and its consequences are studied. To do that, Multiple Indicators–Multiple Causes approach and annual time series data for the period of from1963/64 (1342) to 2010/11 (1389) is employed. The results indicate that the mean size of the UNDERGROUND ECONOMY during this period was 18.20 per cent. The UNDERGROUND ECONOMY is significantly and positively affected by variables such as unemployment and inflation, but is negatively affected by the index of economic openness.
