Abstract

Three features distinguish Persian verbs, namely, transitivity, voice and causativity. Some linguists who studied Persian verbs argued that Persian verbs has two voices, active and inchoative, and some argue that there are three voices in Persian verbs. adding passive to the mentioned ones. This paper studies inchoative verbs in Persian and argues that being inchoative is not opposed to active or passive, in other words, it is not a kind of voice. inchoative verbs are in contrast to causative verbs. The different forms of inchoative verbs in Persian, and some other Iranian languages, are introduced.
