Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic medical condition with a rapid prevalence globally. The total number of people with DM is projected to rise to 693 million by 2045. Due to its delayed and detrimental outcomes and escalating prevalence, DM is becoming a major concern to mind. The purpose of this was to compares the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and compassionfocused therapy (CFT) on Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) and Sleep quality in DM patients. Methods: A pretest-posttest, quasi-experimental research with controls enrolled all patients with type 2 DM (T2DM) who were a member of the Hamedan Diabetes Society in 2021. Forty-eight DM patients who met the inclusion criteria were chosen through the targeted sampling method. The participants were split into three groups through simple random sampling and drawing. Data were collected by testing venous blood samples for Glycosylated hemoglobin assay Petersburg Sleep quality Index (PSQI, 1989). Participants in the first and second groups received CBT and CFT, respectively, while controls in the third group received no intervention. The sessions were once a week for 90 minutes. Data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Results: CFT was found to be more efficacious than CBT in lowering Glycosylated hemoglobin levels (F=3. 13, p<0. 05) and improving Sleep quality (F=5. 8, p<0. 01) in DM patients. Conclusions: The effect of CFT in lowering Glycosylated hemoglobin levels and improving Sleep quality is much higher than that of CBT. This finding can be helpful for healthcare professionals as a new outlook to enhance the healthcare indicators of DM patients.
