Abstract

During 1982-1992 service business grew more markedly than exports with an annual growth rate of 19.5%, whereas the exports growth rate was 7.1%. Service business was 17% in 1980 whereas in 1993 it was 22%. Furthermore, most of the growth in the service sector grew out of the rapid growth of technology and a sense of awareness in industrialized countries. That's why the industialized copuntries and largely the United States tilted towards liberalization anf globalization of the services. Due to these extended efforts service business was one of the major items debated in the Uruguay talks of the WTO. As a result of these talks a framework was worked out to cater multilateral business. This article attempts to weigh the advantages and disadvantages that may arise from the WTO general agreements on service business that the Iranian service sector may face. It would also engage with the prerequisites for membership in each of the sectors.
