Abstract

Increasing growth of industry sector in some of less developed countries is in high degree due to these countries' attractions for foreign investments. Special benefits and advantages of these free zones including tax exempts result in the removal of economic limitations of developing countries and therefore increasing these attractions for foreign investors. Currently, a great number of free zones were established as countries' economic motives and stimulants through all over the world and different countries use free zones as tools for attracting foreign investment, increasing industrial exports, increasing employment, absorbing investment in productive sectors, developing exports, economic growth, absorbing internal afloat cash, helping to control the inflation, eliminating deprivation from regions with development potentials, creating unity between confederate countries, and finally knowledge and technology transfer.In this paper, besides reviewing the literature, theories, objectives, and prerequisites required for establishing free zones and identifying their different kinds, the role of these free zones in economic and commercial development of countries is also analyzed. To do this, some of the worldwide successful and unsuccessful experiences in establishing free zones are selected and then due to the importance and capacity of Chabahar free zone in economic and commercial development of our country, the conditions of this zone is compared with some of the most advanced free zones of the world and its weaknesses and strengths are also evaluated. Finally and as a conclusion, the results and findings of this benchmark study are represented in the form of suggested options in SWOT matrixes.
