Abstract

Marine transport, sharing more than 90% of the world’s transport volume, is the most important type of international transport. The raise of number and rate of vessels’ movement has had an important contribution in increasing the marine traffic particularly in ports’ waterways. So, to prevent accidents and to apply in other cases, a system was established for providing traffic services to vessels in order to promote their safety, increasing the navigation applicability, and managing the movements in canals. Due to the leading role of Shahid Rajaee port in marine transport in Iran, this port has been equipped with vessels traffic service. The present article, after descriptive investigation of maritime traffic services, identifies the measurement indexes of effect on maritime safety, using the Paired T-test, measures the effectiveness of the VTS establishment, and investigates the effect of VTS on maritime safety on entrance canal of Shahid Rajaee Port. The results reveal that VTS establishment on the canal of Shahid Rajaee Port has affected and promoted the maritime safety.
