Abstract

One way to decide about purchasing new port facilities is using simulation models that simulate real port operations and evaluate services provided for the vessels. As the biggest and the most important Iranian Port which is the main origin of import and export of containerized goods, Shahid Rajaee Port is studied using ED simulation model and performance of new port facilities is evaluated. Using this model, number of incoming vessels is determined, the possibility of berthing is assessed, and importing and exporting operation is simulated. Then container handling operation is modeled and container queue is evaluated. Measuring performance speed of the equipment operators and evaluating their working time, ship and container queues are recalculated and in the case that these queues be significant, the number of port facilities will be increased to eliminate the queues. In such cases, purchasing new port facilities is necessary. This study tries to assess the decision-making process for purchasing new equipments and facilities in order to increase ship-servicing capacity and decrease berthing time.
