Title

INFLUENCE OF STARTING AND TARGET ANGLES ON POSITION SENSE TESTING OF KNEE JOINT IN HEALTHY MEN

Abstract

Objective: Rehabilitation continues to evolve with the increased emphasis on patient management and proprioceptive assessment and training.  Proprioception can be defined as a specialized variation of the sensory modality of touch that encompasses the sensation of joint movement (kinesthesia) and joint position ( JOINT POSITION SENSE).The primary objective of the present study was to assess the impact of starting  and TARGET ANGLEs on position sense tests used for clinical assessment.Subjects and Methods: We studied KNEE JOINT POSITION SENSE (JPS) in 20 Males healthy. Our subjects (22 ± 2.4 old) performed KNEE joint angle replication tests during open kinematic chain KNEE extension and flexion over the dominant  KNEE While seated with eyes closed , the subjects were required to match a previously presented TARGET ANGLE for flexion and extension of the KNEE joint. Movements were performed from STARTING ANGLEs of 10o, 45o and 90o to TARGET ANGLEs of 30o, 50o and 70o.Results: Lower repositioning errors occurred with the intermediate 45o STARTING ANGLE and extreme 10o STARTING ANGLE when compared with the STARTING ANGLE of 90o. Furthermore, there were significant relationship between the  TARGET ANGLEa nd the magnitude of displacement (distance between starting and TARGET ANGLEs) . There were less repositioning measurement errors when moving into flexion direction. Conclusion: The study indicated that starting and TARGET ANGLEs influence the outcome of these tests and therefore these variables should be taken into account when interpreting results and when interpreting the results from different studies. In addition, this study also revealed TARGET ANGLE is dependant on the magnitude of displacement (distance between starting and TARGET ANGLEs).
