Abstract

Objective: The kidneys are two bean shaped, reddish-brown organs and lie on the posterior abdominal wall, one on each sides of the vertebral column, behind the peritoneum. In the third week of embryonic period the human urinary system developed as a pronephrous, mesonephrous and metanephrous. The metanephrous called permanent kidney, appears in the 5th week of intrauterine life. The collecting ducts develop from the ureteric bud, an outgrowth of the mesonephric duct close to its entrance into the cloaca. The metanephrous kidney initially located in the pelvic region, but in the 9th week of intrauterine life, shifts to more cranial position in the abdomen. ECTOPIC KIDNEYs are mature kidneys that do not reach their normal position. The ECTOPIC KIDNEYs are smaller than normal ones and May appears as horse-shoe kidney, pelvic, lumbar, abdominal, bilateral or unilaterally. The aim of this prospective study was conducted to find out different kinds of ECTOPIC KIDNEYs in people referred to a clinic in Ahwaz.Subjects and Methods: We studied, over a 15-year period (from 1989–2004), 5000 patients (new born to 80 years of age) radiographies that were taken with intervenous pyelography (IVP) technique. Results: From the 5000 radiographies studied, 56 (1.12%) cases of ECTOPIC KIDNEYs were identified. The type of ECTOPIC KIDNEYs was as following: 12 (0/24 %) horse-shoes, 9 (0/18%) with pelvic, 8 (0/16%) lumbar, 12 (0/24%) abdominal, 5 (0/11%) abdominal-pelvic bilateral, 3 (0/6%) single and 7 (0/14%) crossed type. Four of the latter cases were without fusion, one with upper fusion, one with lower fusion and one with L-shaped kidney. Conclusion: ECTOPIC KIDNEYs are rare anomaly of urogenital system. This anomaly is, usually without signs and symptoms and it can remain undiagnosed till end of the life. However, these may be associated with pelvic or abdominal pain and may be seen as a mass in radiographies and must be taken under consideration during clinical examinations.
