Abstract

Introduction: Presently, university leadership needs to take a new stance to deal with complex and unknown events, so that it could put the organization on its right path. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent of the application of CYBERNETIC MODEL indices at ISFAHAN UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES.Methods: The research population of this descriptive survey constituted the entire faculty members of ISFAHAN UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (during 2009-2010) from which 207 members were selected by means of stratified random sampling. A valid and reliable researcher-made questionnaire was designed to collect the data related to the seven indices of the cybernetics model; namely, control, tight & loose coupling, interaction, decision making, hierarchy, leadership, and equilibrium. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (one variable t-test).Results: Regarding the fact that the mean of each of the seven components was found to be higher than the intermediate level (3), ISFAHAN UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES seems to enjoy an appropriate cybernetic position in organizing its activities. The results also revealed that from the components of the CYBERNETIC MODEL, Isfahan University showed the highest tendency to the hierarchy index (mean=3/66).Discussion: Since the University managers have not initially embarked on organizing university activities on the basis of a certain model of cybernetics‚ it can be concluded that if a management model is developed in accordance with the conceptual framework of cybernetics, it is expected that the University gains even a higher position compared to the one it enjoys now.
