Abstract

The purpose of the present paper is to concentrate on the theoretical as well as empirical analysis of studies on the relationship betwee inflation and stock returns. There are different views in the literature on the relationship between inflation and stock returns. In other words, some studies using data of developing and developed countries conclude a positive relation, whereas other studies which had used somewhat different kind of data for different countries came up with completely opposite results nd concluded a negative relationship between the two variables. We have also reviewed studies which rejected any significant results. The present article examines, in detail, the relevant studies since 1950S. We have divided these studies into two categories.One involves the studies analyzing the relationship between the two variables without taking into account other variables. The relationship between the two variables has been discussed the other studies using an indirect method. In other words in order to see the effect of inflation on stock return the researchers maintained that any relationship between the two variables must be obtained through the relationship between inflation and economic activities (economic growth) on the one hand and the relationship between the growth and stock returns on the other hand. The method known as "Proxy Effect" has been widely used in recent years. Our review of the literature of all studies taken place in the last half a century concludes that there are still ambiguities in this regard. Perhaps more future empirical works could reduce some of these ambiguities.
