Abstract

 In the traditional view toward literacy, the basic skills of reading and writing of words have always been central to the verbal performances. Therefore literacy is regarded as the extent of understanding surface meanings of the written language. Opposite to this trend are the critical views toward literacy that consider the power of thinking and critical understanding and these are believed to be more significant than just understanding words. The learners in this perspective are invited to go beyond the reading and writing skill and find a critical awareness toward the world. Writing as one of the main pillars of literacy has always been under the effect of the traditional views and the methods offered in these views emphasize on the skill- based perspectives of teaching writing than critical ones. In this research, dialogic journal writing as a critical writing performance was studied in English language education in one of the Iranian schools. The role of writing dialog journals in creating dialogs as one of the most significant dimensions of critical education and also its role in creating critical and creative writing are crucial points regarded the questions of the research. The triple research data (dialog journal texts, questionnaire, and written interview) were qualitatively analyzed in a process of triangulation to find out revelant patterns and critical writing. This study showed that writing dialog journals in the process of learning EFL can lead to a critical dialogic relationship between the teacher and students. It also provided an opportunity for the students to gain an ability to write critically and creatively that are the purposes of CRITICAL LITERACY.
