Abstract

 When scheduling for projects, the UNCERTAINTY associated with a project such as total COST and DURATION should be taken into consideration. This paper presents a method for PROJECT SCHEDULING using fuzzy activity DURATIONs and taking into account the resource constraints during the scheduling process. The method investigates the most suitable fuzzy schedule considering the COST and DURATION criteria. The presented method generates all possible schedules considering normal availability for resources and calculates project DURATION and COST, accordingly. If none of the developed schedules satisfies both criteria, other scenarios will be examined by changing the allocation of resources to activities, which in turn will change the DURATION of the activities, and consequently, the COST and DURATION of the project. Different scenarios can be examined until both criteria are satisfied. Different schedules are compared based on their COST and DURATION and the importance of each criterion defined for the project through respective coefficients. An algorithm is developed for the proposed methodology. The algorithm and its functionality are explained in detail in this paper. The developed algorithm is implemented in a computer program using C++ programming language. The application of the algorithm is demonstrated through a case study of scheduling for an actual construction project.
