Abstract

Time is an abstract notion which is always understood through association with concrete entities. In the contemporary cognitive theory of METAPHOR, theoreticians speak of diverse TIME METAPHORs such as "time as a location or bounded space" or "time as an object". On the one hand, in these METAPHORs the relationship between TIME and observer is taken into account in a way that one can think in terms of contradictory conceptual METAPHORs such as "time moves and the observer is motionless" and "time is motionless and the observer moves". On the other hand, the amount of conventionality or novelty is also noticeable in the cognitive theory of METAPHOR. In this paper, TIME METAPHORs in FOROUGH FARROKHZAD's poems are extracted and examined in terms of their conventionality or novelty. Our study demonstrates the fact that the METAPHORs used in her first three books, "The Wall", "The Captive" and "Rebellion", are mostly conventional while in her last two books, "Rebirth" and "Let Us Believe in the Beginning of the Cold Season" conventional TIME METAPHORs are extended and new semantic features accompany those METAPHORs and there are cases where completely new METAPHORs are created.
