Abstract

After the publication of the Samfoni-ye Mordegan (1989), many critics have pointed out the influence of Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury on Abbas Maroufi’s novel. Perhaps with the publication of Azal ta Abad (Daroonkavi-ye Samfoni-ye Mordegan)and other works that deal with the commonalities of these two novels, there is no more the need for further investigation of the topic. Moreover, Nader Ebrahimi (1936-2008), in an interview entitled as “Ghooteh Khordani Gharib dar Dastan” (1997), without any direct reference to the Samfoni-ye Mordegan, accuses the author of the novel of plagiarizing, not from the Sound and the Fury, but from Bar-e Digar Shahri ke Doost Midashtam (1966). In this paper, with attention to the principle of anxiety of influence and the polyvalence of meaning in this novel, I have tried to respond to Ebrahimi’s accusations and to investigate the how and why of the influence of Bar-e Digar Shahri ke Doost Midashtamon Maroufi’s novel.
