Abstract

After the publication of the SAMFONI-YE MORDEGAN (1989), many critics have pointed out the influence of Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury on ABBAS MAROUFI’s novel. Perhaps with the publication of Azal ta Abad (Daroonkavi-ye SAMFONI-YE MORDEGAN)and other works that deal with the commonalities of these two novels, there is no more the need for further investigation of the topic. Moreover, NADER EBRAHIMI (1936-2008), in an interview entitled as “Ghooteh Khordani Gharib dar Dastan” (1997), without any direct reference to the SAMFONI-YE MORDEGAN, accuses the author of the novel of plagiarizing, not from the Sound and the Fury, but from BAR-E DIGAR SHAHRI KE DOOST MIDASHTAM (1966). In this paper, with attention to the principle of ANXIETY OF INFLUENCE and the polyvalence of meaning in this novel, I have tried to respond to Ebrahimi’s accusations and to investigate the how and why of the influence of BAR-E DIGAR SHAHRI KE DOOST MIDASHTAMon Maroufi’s novel.
