Abstract

Since the second century AH, Sufis have incorporated the concept of “love” in their discourses, and have defined a new relationship between themselves and God. Although initially this relationship met with opposition from scholars, gradually it found its place in Sufis’ discourse. Finally, in the beginning of the sixth century, four centuries of contemplation on the meaning of “love” brought Sufism into a new glorious stage. In this study, I intend to analyze the primary and secondary cosmological viewpoints of Sufism about love. Through an analysis of ontological-structural metaphors in CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR theory, I have concluded that Sufis’ metaphors of love have evolved around two basic metaphors: “GOD IS SULTAN” and “GOD IS BELOVED.”
