Abstract

EVALUATION as an important issue in conversation analysis formed unconsciously in the texts and contexts. This paper aims at investigating EVALUATION in academic discourse with considering GENDER. So 9 DEFENSE SESSIONS of men and 9 DEFENSE SESSIONS of women are analyzed by Martin and White (2005) model. Qualitative and quantitative analysis reveal that GENDER in isolation does not affect EVALUATION in academic discourse but the combination of different factors such as context, COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE, IDENTITY and face affected on EVALUATION in this COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE.
