Title

LA FONTAINE’S INDEBTEDNESS TO THE EASTERN LITERATURE

Pages

  187-206

Abstract

The present article studies and reviews the impact of Iranian and EASTERN allegories and parables on the greatest allegorical poet of the seventeenth century France- Jean de LA FONTAINE. Although LA FONTAINE has paid attention to the Aesop and Phaedrus FABLEs which themselves might have been rooted in EASTERN FABLEs, he has also been impacted by the allegories and parables of ANVAR by SOHEILI and GOLESTAN by SAADI. Of course he has also been influential in Iranian and Persian poetry. At times it is very difficult to judge the original source of LA FONTAINE’s FABLEs.
