Abstract

The rising of Russia as an empire and its expansion to the northern shores of the Caspian Sea, and capturing the important port of Hashtar Khan where commercial transportation included international importance; on the other hand, Gilan's important geographical location alongside the Caspian and its neighborhood with Russia and its natural and economic advantages and its most important thing, i. e. Silk had an important role in Iran's foreign relationship with Russia, especially in commercial areas. The present research has considered the importance of Gilan's Silk role, as the most valuable commercial good of this time which was produced the most in Gilan, in the two countries' commercial and political relationships. The main purpose of the research was to study the role of Gilan's Silk in the exchanges Moscow Company and its commerce officers, and investigate the new commercial path of Gilan-Hashtar Khan-South-Russia and the attempts of Khan Ahmad, the last ruler of Al-Kia, for establishing the relations with Russia. Research method was library and cited to historical texts. The major research findings show that the Russians, with the conquest of Hashtar Khan, got an important port for commerce in the Caspian Sea. Their commercial officers in Gilan first transported Iran's Silk to Hashtar Khan Market, afterward exported to Moscow and then to Europe. After that Shah Abbas conquered Gilan, Russia's relations with Karkia were finished. Although the relations of Russia with Iran were created for different motives, it finally led to commercial-political development of the two countries.
