Abstract

Background and Objective: Resilience constitutes an essential characteristic for university students. Sense of coherence and Ambiguity tolerance are variables closely associated with Resilience and psychological well-being. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between Sense of coherence and Resilience, mediated by ambiguity tolerance, among university students.

Materials and Methods: This descriptive-correlational study employed path analysis. A stratified random sample of 351 Master’s degree students in Psychology from the Islamic Azad University of Central Tehran Branch participated during the 2022–2023 academic year. Data were collected using Antonovsky’s Sense of coherence, Connor-Davidson Resilience, and Weden Ambiguity tolerance questionnaire. Pearson’s correlation and path analysis were conducted using JMP Pro 17.

Results: Pearson’s correlation revealed significant associations between SOC and Ambiguity tolerance r= 0.16 and between Ambiguity tolerance and Resilience r = 0.11.The direct path coefficients between Sense of coherence and tolerance of ambiguity were positive and significant (ß=0.034, P=0.001) and between tolerance of ambiguity and Resilience in students were positive and significant (ß=1.343, P=0.02). Also, tolerance of ambiguity played a mediating role in the indirect path in the relationship between Sense of coherence and Resilience (ß=0.05, P<0.05).

Conclusion: The study showed that Sense of coherence led to increased Resilience in students through increased tolerance of ambiguity.
