Abstract

The purpose of this study was to predict the components of achievement goals through big five personality traits and emotional intelligence. The research method was descriptive and correlational. The population consisted all students of Isfahan University. Among all, 406 students were sampled using randomly stratified sampling. The research tools consisted of (Petrides & Furnham's 2001) emotional intelligence Questionnaire, (Goldberg's 1999) five big personality factors Questionnaire, and (Elliot and McGregor’ s 2001) achievement goals questionnaire. The data were analyzed through stepwise regression. The results of stepwise regression analysis indicated that agreeableness, openness to experience, and conscientiousness have a positive and significant relation with approach-mastery goal and they can predict it totally with 18% of the variance. In addition, emotional intelligence, agreeableness and neurosis can predict the avoidance-mastery goal with totally 8% of the variance. Among the components of personality only conscientiousness can predict the approach-performance goal with 1% of the variance. emotional intelligence can predict the avoidance-performance goal with 5% of the variance. As a result of personality and emotional intelligence may be good predictor for student achievement goals.
