Abstract

Students of SOCIAL WORK have always been faced with the question: what are the differences and similarities between the field of SOCIAL WORK, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY and COUNSELING or that what are the distinctive features of these disciplines. The present paper attempts to focus on the issue so as to shed some lights on the common features as well as features that make SOCIAL WORK, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY or COUNSELING as separate fields of study. In CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY, the main emphasis falls on identifying mental disorders and their remedy whereas COUNSELING is more concerned with provision of guidance and advice on areas of education, occupation, marriage, matrimonial life etc. On the basis of some reliable sources, it can be concluded that the CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY and COUNSELING attach greater importance to people's mental structure, their feelings and behaviors. From this perspective, mental emotional and behavioral disorders should be recognized and due therapeutic measures should be applied to resolve them. In SOCIAL WORK profession, man is regarded as a social being and each individual is not considered independent of others, instead he should be viewed in relation and interrelation with other individuals as well as environment. From the point of view of SOCIAL WORK the origin of human problems stem from not only individual or family factors but also from the interaction between them and their environment. SOCIAL WORK therefore aims at creating a change in both their client's mental status and their SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT and social condition while clinical psychologists and counselors do not play any role in the development of social resources, SOCIAL WORKer's job is to not only to resolve people's problems through relying on the social resources but consider the development of those resources. Clinical psychologists and counselors attempt in their carrier to find remedies for their clients problems and in so doing they may invite the patients' families to their offices as well, whereas SOCIAL WORKer in addition to carrying out various interviews with their clients penetrate inner to their living environment and put their behaviors and interactions under direct observation and scrutinize and assess their problems and if possible they take due measures to bring about the necessary changes in their family and SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT.
