A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ARABIC AND PERSIAN PROVERBS ABOUT SPEECH: A LEXICAL, SYNTACTIC, RHETORICAL, AND SEMANTIC REVIEW

Pages

  295-321

Abstract

PROVERBSare the mirror to the culture, customs, and mentality of a society. Studying oral literature of nations is the simplest way to learn about the culture of every society. PROVERBSare considered as one of the most common forms of oral literature. Different communities have influenced each other due to relationship, migration, war, trade, etc. In the course of this influence and cultural exchanges, sometimes it is difficult to identify the true origin due to similarities. Studying Arabic and Persian PROVERBS and their similarities and differences indicates Iranians and Arabs cultural, intellectual, and social similarities and differences. This study attempts to comparatively review a selection of Persian and Arabic PROVERBS about "speech" in the SEMANTICS, lexical, syntactic and rhetorical fields, to indicate cultural similarities and differences of Iranians and the Arabs. Lexical review of PROVERBS confirms their eloquence. Syntactic review confirms their descriptiveness. The verbs in the PROVERBS are dominantly in the affirmative sense. Rhetorically, figures of speech based on comparison are dominant. Finally, it was concluded that brevity, rhythmical expression, and dominance of meaning indicate the deep relation and communication between Iranians and Arabs.
