Title

THE POETRY OF THE MASHRUTEH PERIOD AND THE COST OF LIBERALISM

Pages

  187-208

Abstract

The present research is to review the concept of freedom in the thought and poetry of three famous Mashruteh poets, BAHAR, Eshghi, and AREF. A period in which freedom, metamorphosized into a poetic and romantic concept and the aforementioned poets, having extremist and absolutist ideas and sometimes unilateral harsh tones and emotionl-laden attitudes, were not immune from the attitudunial mistakes. In this regard, Eshghi, in an extremist slogan, without a deep sense of what people expected from the community of intellectuals and cultural leaders, has introduced constitution monarchy ashaving poor foundations, and demands “Eid blood”. BAHAR, in an ode, sees all of Tehran’s people as the source of evil and corruption. Because of his excessive desire for freedom, AREF admits to the political mistakes but at the same time he issues his self-defense by means of the weapon of poetry. The authors show how during the process of power transmission and community shift, the poets were misguided, for a period, in their predictions and judgments, and how they paid the cost of their absolutism and extremism.
