Abstract

Rural residential housing not only possesses such architectural values as simple visual and aesthetic patterns, harmonization with ecology and living standards, utilization of local materials and domestic know-how, it also owns the highest level of compatibility with the natural environment as the groundwork of human activities which gives it a particular identity. The issue of harmonization of architecture with geographic specifications of a place, especially climatic elements creates an environment in which maximum bioclimatic comfort is provided for the inhabitants throughout the year with minimum cost. In the study of Kerman rural residential housing, taking into view, the extensive width of the area and the variety of elevation, climatic factors such as topography and land form were studied Due to the importance of geographic factors, in this study, climatic, topographic, land form, subsistence indices and dominant construction materials were depicted and afterwards, maps were plotted for all stages via analytical tools such as 'Spatial Analyst', '3D Analyst' and 'Interpolation'. Also, maps were merged and combined to produce zoning divisions for each geographic factor in GIS setting. Thus, Kerman was divided into five climatic zones, four elevation zones, three geographic zones and four architectural zones with related specifications.
