Abstract

Background: Developmental dysplasia of hip (DOH) is more or less a common problem in neonates and infants, however, in case of early diagnoss it may be simply treated with Pavlik-Harness (P-H). The present study was performed in a private orthopedic clinic in Tehran between 1994 and 2001 to evaluate the efficacy of Pavlic-Harness in the treatment of developmental dysplasia of hip.Materials and methods: Forty-four children has been enrolled for this clinical study with the diagnosis of DOH. Type of delivery, family history, other congenital diseases, hip range of motion, an thorough clinical examination were achieved for all patients. In case of highly suspicions, he/she would refer to a sonography clinic. Then, if positive findings were observed the patients would be treated with P-H for 6-12 weeks. During the treatment period, control sonography was achieved to check the position of femur in acetabulum. Finally, patients were followed for at least 30 months to find out any possible complication.Results: Of 44 patients, 18 had been excluded, 6 for normal hip position in sonography, 4 for not referring for control sonography, and 8 for not referring for follow up. The overall success rate of P-H treatment was 96.1 %. Conclusion: With respect to the known complications of DOH, early diagnosis and appropriate therapeutic intervention is highly recommended. P-H is simple, noninvasive, Cileap therapeutic modality that is associated with high success rate and few complications.
