Title

MICROBIOLOGIC EVALUATION OF BACTERIURIA IN PREGNANT WOMEN IN SHAHREKORD IN 1999

Pages

  337-342

Abstract

The incidence of BACTERIURIA in PREGNANCY and its asymptomatic form is 4-10% and 2-7% respectively. In contrast to other diseases, if it is not diagnosed and promptly treated, can be accompanied with severe complications including pylonephritis, premature labor, and abortion. In this study the incidence rate of BACTERIURIA and its relationship with clinical symptoms, a history of urinary tract infections, causative and common responsible bacteria and their sensitivity to antimicrobial drugs in pregnant women has been evaluated in Shahrekord in summer 1999. The descriptive strategy of this study was performed on 864 pregnant women for having BACTERIURIA through urine collection in its middle period of ejection. The incidence rate of BACTERIURIA was determined in samples and its confidence interval was obtained and odds ratio for a history of urinary tract infection and renal diseases was determined. The incidence rate of BACTERIURIA was 88% and 51.3% of cases showed its clinical symptoms. The most common isolated microorganisms were Eschrerichia coli (55%), Klebsiella (12%), Enterobacterium (11%), and Staphylococcus saprophitcus (9%). The latter bacterium was commonly obtained from the urine of young pregnant women. The results of sensitivity test showed that there are a sensitivity of 93, 90, 83, 76, 63, and 29 to cephalexin, nitrofurantoin, cephalotin, nalidixic acid, cotrimoxazole and ampicillin. Therefore, it is concluded that asymptomatic BACTERIURIA should be highly considered in clinics and it is recommended to study its causative factors.
