Abstract

Background: CHRONIC SINUSITIS is a high prevalent problem that is one of the diagnosis difficulties in today medical world. Some reports have indicated the ability of the LIMITED CORONAL CT SCAN in diagnosis of CHRONIC SINUSITIS. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the ability of the LIMITED CORONAL CT SCAN in the diagnosis of CHRONIC SINUSITIS. Sciences Materials and methods: It was a clinical trial. Those who had sinusitis-related clinical manifestations for at least 3 months, were considered as CHRONIC SINUSITIS and received adequate medical therapy for 4 weeks. Following the therapy, if the clinical manifestations were still existing, the patient was served as the case group. Then, all of the patients had undergone complete coronal CT scan. Sections 2, 5, 7, 11 that have accordingly passed from frontal"maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinus were selected as the LIMITED CORONAL CT SCAN. Reports of the LIMITED CORONAL CT SCAN were recorded and on the other hand, reports of the COMPLETED CORONAL CT SCAN were set as the Gold Standard. PPV and NPV of the LIMITED CORONAL CT SCAN determined in all of CHRONIC SINUSITIS as well as in each of sinus, respectively. Results: The study population included 53 patients with mean age of 32.4±13.5 years. Results were: PPV in all of sinusitis 91.9% and its NPV 68.8%. PPV in chronic maxillary sinusitis 89% and its NPV 68%. PPV in chronic ethmoid sinusitis 82.6% and its NPV 86.7%. PPV in chronic frontal sinusitis 77.8% and its NPV 100%. PPV in chronic sphenoid sinusitis 90% and its NPV 95.3%. Conclusion: LIMITED CORONAL CT SCAN can not be a suitable alternative for the COMPLETED CORONAL CT SCAN.
