Abstract

Background: Attention Deficit- Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent psychiatric disorders of school-aged children. This could lead to substance abuse, anxiety and mood disorders. Regarding the lack of adequate literatures in Iran, the present study was conducted over the school-aged boys in Tehran in 200001. Materials and methods: It was a cross-sectional study. Of 291000 boys aged 7-12 years, 624 were selected through a simple randomized sampling. Teachers were asked to fill the questionnaires. Questionnaire was designed according to the DSM-IV criteria. Results: ADHD was reported in 19.9% of the students. Attention deficit type was the most prevalent among the three subtypes (50.8%). No significant correlation was found between the three subtypes and children's age, parents' education level, family size and the number of their moving. Conclusion: ADHD has a considerable PREVALENCE in our society. Further studies in other provinces and determining the etiologic factors seem to be necessary.
