Title

Smuggling-Car-Driving as a Survival Strategy, The Lived Experiences of Marginalized Youth in Lorestan

Abstract

Lorestan province, which is one of the least developed regions in the nation, is confronted with structural economic issues and a lack of formal employment opportunities. This situation has led to the spread of informal sector employment and the emergence of phenomena such as “smuggling-car-driving” among many marginalized adolescents. The current investigation investigates the lived experiences of individuals who have entered this field by employing a qualitative approach and phenomenological methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 smuggling-car-drivers in Lorestan to gather data, which were then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results indicate that smuggling-car-driving is a phenomenon that results from structural inequalities and an unjust distribution of opportunities. These individuals are the casualties of inefficient institutional systems. Moreover, smuggling-car-driving is not merely a personal choice or individual decision, it is a response to a range of structural and social pressures, including unemployment, economic poverty, a masculine culture of adventure, simple access to this work, discrimination in the distribution of economic resources and opportunities, the desire to earn money, and implicit support for this phenomenon by social networks. The results indicate that street racing serves as a “survival strategy” for a significant number of these young individuals in response to unjust and restrictive structures. Marginalized youth are increasingly engaging in informal and risky activities due to chronic deprivation and a lack of employment opportunities. Despite being legally prohibited, these activities are perceived as a means of survival from their perspective. Therefore, it is imperative for policymakers to reestablish economic opportunities, fortify support institutions, and establish formal and sustainable employment opportunities in underdeveloped regions like Lorestan, all while maintaining a structural and justice-oriented perspective, in order to mitigate the proliferation of phenomena like street racing.
