Abstract

Background: PEDICULOSIS and SCABIES are infectious diseases that can spread in overcrowded place, like PRISON, and make a lot of sanitary difficulties in public places. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of these diseases in Ghezel Resar (male PRISON).Materials and Methods: In a descriptive study on 1404 PRISONers in Ghezel Resar PRISON in 2004, PRISONers were screened for SCABIES and PEDICULOSIS by Dermatologist.Results: From 1404, 31 PRISONer (2.2%) was infected by SCABIES and 12 (%/9) with body PEDICULOSIS. There was no case of scalp and pubis PEDICULOSIS. All patients were male (MALE PRISON). All (100%) patients with SCABIES and 83% with PEDICULOSIS had intense pruritus.There were significant relation with duration of PRISONing and infected (p<0.001). More prevalence of SCABIES was observed in overcrowded cells. In PEDICULOSIS group, more addicted people was observed (P<0.01).Conclusion: we advise to visit the new PRISONers by Dermatologist or trained doctors to find the infected PRISONers in order to reduce distribution of infections in population.
