Abstract

The study of ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION and the factors affecting it is a significant topic in economy. Generally, in developed countries ECONOMIC GROWTH leads to reduction of ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION and consequently clean environment starts to be regarded as a luxurious good. However, ECONOMIC GROWTH in developing countries leads to an increase in ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION as clean environment is considered an inferior or at most an ordinary good. Since foreign direct investment (FDI) is one of the factors affecting ECONOMIC GROWTH in any country, investigating the relationship between this variable and ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION is of great importance. Therefore, the main aim of this article is to study the effect of FDI and economic freedom on ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION in the economy in Iran in the period between 1978 and 2008, using Auto Regressive Distribution Lag (ARDL) model. The results obtained from this study confirm there is a positive and significant correlation between FDI and ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION.
