BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION ANALYSIS OF PERSIAN SAFAVI’S MANUSCRIPTS EMPHASISED ON SCRIPTS AND WRITING CHARACTERISTICS

Abstract

 Purpose: The aim of this study is a survey on the bibliographical descriptions of Persian manuscripts of Safavi’s period.Methodology: Descriptive and analytical methods are used. To collect data a checklist was prepared according to 5 descriptive cataloging area of AACR2 (Title and responsibility, physical description, writing characteristics, decoration and illumination, notes area). The total population was 3561 titles extracted from catalogues of 5 libraries Golestan Palace Museum; Library, Museum and Document Center of Iran Parliament; Central Library & Documentation Center University Of Tehran; Malek National Library and Mueum Institution; National Library and Archives of Iran which contained the biggest number of titles but a statistical sample, 351 titles, was assessed according to Morgan table.Findings: This study indicates The relationship between the line selection with in subject tendency, first to religious and then to history, natural science and to literature mathematics, moral and spiritual subjects. Paying particular attention to the use of decorative in title page at the beginning of works, using colored tables, illumination and simple and double frontispiece and colophon, and decoration at the end and margins in the copies are specific features of this period.Conclusion: The first research hypothesis; the existence of a significant relationship between the kind of scribes and the subject matter of the books are confirmed. Also the second research hypothesis: The dominance of calligraphy to the normal writings is confirmed using the chi-square test. At the end some suggestion are proposed for CATALOGING OF PERSIAN MANUSCRIPTS to avoid the differences which are frequent throughout the Persian Safavi’s Manuscripts Catalogs in the libraries.
