Abstract

Most information technology “fIT” lITerature has taken a structural CONTINGENCY approach to study the alignment of IT to organisational characteristics. LITerature review shows that there is a conspicuous lack of empirical research to investigate and test the validITy of the different perspectives simultaneously. Based on comprehensive survey data from 213 Iranian companies, the relationships between IT, four organisational design variables, and ITs abilITy to compete are systematically investigated from six three FIT perspectives, namely: MEDIATION, MODERATION and matching. The results highlights that there is a need to specify the exact approach of fIT used otherwise, researchers may obtain contradictory or inconsistent results. These different approaches are so particular in nature and consequences that none simply can be selected as a comprehensive method. Also, the findings suggest that matching and MODERATION are unsuITed perspectives to examine the fIT between design variables and IT usage. Among bivariate perspectives only MEDIATION perspective confirms coherence among the “design variables-IT usage”. The results of this research have provided a theoretical and methodological contribution to the emerging lITerature on the integration of CONTINGENCY theory into IT research.
