Abstract

The problem of UNWANTED PREGNANCY is a universal phenomenon, one that exists in all societies regardless of the degree of modernity and development. In a demographic HEALTH survey in Iran, 35% of the married women in the REPRODUCTIVE age reported that their last or current pregnancies were unwanted and unintended. This is consistent with the result obtained in a number of studies undertaken in Iran alter ward. Although the phenomenon of UNWANTED PREGNANCY is a significant topic in population studied, it has received very little attention. In the last three decades, a number of studies have been undertaken to understand the magnitude of this phenomenon and its determinants and consequences. This study has shown the differences between two groups: The first group, married women who reported that their current pregnancies were wanted. The second group, those married women who reported that their current pregnancies were unwanted. In this survey, social demographic and FAMILY PLANNING data were gathered from 380 pregnant women in REPRODUCTIVE ages (15-49 years of age) at the Public Planning Clinic in Shiraz using the survey method, oral interview technique, and structured questionnaires. Our main purpose of the study was to present some evidence concerned with unwanted pregnancies among pregnant women by using the scientific method. For this purpose, a variety of statistical techniques, particularly the logistic regression, were exerted. The multi-variant analysis adopted in the logistic regression method shoed a significant relation between UNWANTED PREGNANCY and variables such as women's current age, husband's education, women's age at their first marriage, number of living children, and present practice of contraceptive method before current pregnancy. These variables collectively can predict the dependent variable of this study correctly in about 78% of the cases.
