Abstract

Introduction: SEXUAL DIMORPHISM of cranial and spinal nucleus has been demonstrated in normal rodents. In addition, certain structures in mammalian nervous system which are not directly involved in sexual behavior also show SEXUAL DIMORPHISM. The aim of present study was to clarify SEXUAL DIMORPHISM of TRIGEMINAL MOTOR NUCLEUS.Methods: Twenty adult RATs (Sprague -dawely) were randomized into two groups: male (n=10) and female (n=10). After perfusion and fixation, the brain stems were removed; coronal sections (50mm-thick) were cut and stained with nissl.Results: This study showed significant morphometric differences between TRIGEMINAL MOTOR NUCLEUS in male and female adult RATs. Based on our finding the volume, cell number and density of male motor nucleus of trigeminal nerve was significantly more than female.Conclusion: There is SEXUAL DIMORPHISM in TRIGEMINAL MOTOR NUCLEUS in volume, cell number and density of male and female adult RAT.
