Abstract

 The present study examined the relationship between parental consanguinity and neurosis personality in parents with intellectual disability (mental retardation) children in comparison with parents of normal children. It sought to explain the role of consanguineous marriages and maternal character neurosis that may increase the birth of mentally retarded children. Method of the research was description-analytical and ex post facto. Statistical population consisted of two groups of parents with mentally retarded children and parents with normal children in Behbahan city. The sample consisted of 220 individuals (110 parents with mentally retarded children and 110 parents of normal children). Sample size was justified according to the size of population and statistical model. Random sampling was used for mothers with mentally retarded children and multi-stage random was used for mothers of normal children. Research instruments included researcher made questionnaire about parental consanguinity and Eysenck’ s Personality Inventory (57 items). Our findings from, logistic regression models indicated that consanguinity may increase the risk of mentally retarded children. However, the obtained results were not sufficient for determining the significance of the relationship between the consanguinity and introversion-extroversion personality types and group member ship.
