Title

THE INFLUENCES OF VENTILATION ON BIOLOGICAL CONCENTRATION OF AIR IN A TUBERCULOSIS PATIENT ROOM

Abstract

 Background: VENTILATION plays a crucial role in reducing the number of air transmitted pathogens in ISOLATED ROOMS, as well as rooms where the patients diagnosed with tuberculosis are admitted. Determination of the suitable type of VENTILATION system and the proper ventilating rate has always been a challenge among the industrial hygienists. The arrangement of the patients’ bed and the location of the staff are also expected to influence the occupational exposure of the staffs’ to the harmful airborne particles whilst providing medical care to the patients in the rooms. The purpose of this project was to determine the state of VENTILATION systems, patient’s bed and the location of the healthcare staff in these rooms, upon the risk to the staff being exposed to the airborne pollution in these places, and also, upon the total density of the bacteria in the air of the patients’ room.Methods: Throughout this practical study, a single-bed hospital room, where a Tuberculosis patient had been admitted, was chosen. Thereafter, 5 types of VENTILATION systems - each of which were of 3 different capacities were applied for the experiment. Whilst applying various ventilating scenarios, a patient’s bed and a statue of a hypothetical healthcare staff were positioned in 2 different locations. During each of these experiments, 3 occupational samples were taken from the BIO-AEROSOLS in the room. The samples were collected using a biological sampler and agar plates.Results: The results revealed that the total density of the BIO-AEROSOLS in the patient’s room changes significantly (pvalue<0.001) within different plans. Even throughout the least amount of capacity and the worst aeration and the concentration of indoor air BIO-AEROSOLS is, nevertheless, meaningfully decreased (p<0.001) in comparison with the air of a room within which no VENTILATION system is utilized. The findings showed that when air is supplied via a vent on the ceiling and it is exhausted from a vent situated on a wall at the southern part of the room, the total density of the BIO-AEROSOLS (in three capacities of 3, 6 and 12 air changes per hour) would be reduced to 8.57 cfu/m3 (the range of 39 to 76 and confidence interval of 95 percent). Application of 12 air changes per hour reduces the total density of the bacteria in the room to the least, that is, an average of 68 cfu/m3 (the range of 54 to 83 and confidence interval of 95 percent), and the risk tolerance of exposure to the hypothetical nurse would be reduced to 32 cfu/m3 (the range of 21 to 43 and confidence interval of 95 percent). Analysis of the statistical figures revealed that subject to the same type and capacity, the arrangement of the bed and the location of the worker in the plans studied, causes no significant contrast in the total density of the sampled pollutions from the air, and the risk tolerance of the worker.Conclusion: The application of a system as determined in this study is recommended for ISOLATED ROOMS.
