Abstract

This study seeks to reconstruct the meaning of the social and cultural implications of ZAYANDEHROOD RIVER's water shortage and dryness and their impacts on URBAN SUSTAINABILITY through the lived experiences of Isfahan residents. The research method is phenomenological qualitative, and the sampling method is based on purposive sampling of the homogeneous type. Therefore thirty two individuals were selected from among Isfahan residents, men and women ranging in age from 30 to 65 years, and they fully expressed their lived experiences about ZAYANDEHROOD RIVER's water shortage and dryness during a deep semi structured interview. Content analysis is applied for data analysis, and the criteria of credibility, reliability, and objectivity were used to validate the findings. The findings of this research were in the form of four global categories resulting from the extraction and concept tagging of data in 92 basic categories, 27 organizing categories, and 14 sub-global categories. The global categories include SOCIAL CAPITAL (a decrease in social participation, ...), POLITICAL CAPITAL (a decrease in political trust, ...), economic capital (a decrease in the prices of agricultural lands with little or no water, changes in crop cultivation, ...), and CULTURAL CAPITAL (changes in food tastes, ...). Altogether the findings suggest that the water shortage and dryness of ZAYANDEHROOD RIVER have affected the residents' (economic, social, political, and cultural) capitals, especially those of the residents in eastern Isfahan (mainly farmers). The residents consider the DROUGHT and water shortage to be the main reason for the destruction of the civilization and culture of the historic city of Isfahan, and suppose the city's economic, social, political, and cultural health will be in danger.
