Abstract

The research subject is “Studying the impact of Electronic media (Internet) on building generation gap between the children and the parents of the families in Tehran”. The research analyzes the issue of the internet use and its effect on building gaps between young and older generations. This relatively young media because of its unique characteristics has turned to be a pervasive element with profound effects, in spite of its short lifetime. The main purpose of the research is to identify the impact of the electronic media (the internet) involved in creation of gap between the generations, that is; the parents and the children of Tehrani families. In this sense the research closely examines and studies the factors influencing in building this kind of gaps. The study is a survey research based mainly based on the questionnaires responded by the statistical population. In order to conduct and fulfill the objectives of the research a documentary search has been done and the existing literature has been reviewed, with the help of the existing literature several relevant hypotheses have been made, based on the theoretical framework, dependant and independent variables and indicators the relevant hypothesis have been proven and rejected.Findings of the research show that the “MEDIA CONTENT”, “virtual communication”, “friend making” and “audience interaction” have been proven to the influential and effective indicators significant which have their impact on gap building between generations. "Value gap", “behavior gap”, “attitude gap”, and “communication gap” are factors to measure the created gaps between generations. The statistical population includes randomly selected 450 residents in Tehran (consisting 22 district of the greater Tehran municipality), divided in two age groups from 15-25 and 40-60 age groups. The gathered data have been processed by the use of SPSS software, the descriptive research methods.Based on the findings of the research the “internet content”, and the “virtual communication” are parameters which have a significant role in building the generation gap, while the “friend making” parameter derived from the concept of cultural acceptance have no effect in building the mentioned gaps. The remaining hypothesis didn’t prove to be effective in building gaps between young and older generations.
