THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE ON MOLTING AND MORTALITY OF NARROWCLAWED CRAYFISH (ASTACUS LEPTODACTYLUS)

Abstract

 Molting is an important biological process and dependent on environmental factors in crustacean, it affected on growth and reproduction, highly. In this study, the samples were collected from Fisheries Research Station of Sefidrud, Astaneh Ashrafieyeh, in 3 seasons (spring through autumn), consisted of a control (water TEMPERATURE 17 to 21oC) and four experimental groups (water TEMPERATURE, 15±0.5, 20±0.5, 25±0.5, and 30±0.5oC) and each with three replicates. The rate of MOLTING and MORTALITY was significantly different between treatments in experimental groups. The trend of MOLTING was ascending from 3th to 5th weeks of investigation, with the least different in the fourth week (p<0.05). No MORTALITY observed in 15oC group whereas in other groups, the highest rate observed in week 1 and 2 of the investigation. Based on the results obtained in this study, it seems that the optimum TEMPERATURE for rearing of freshwater CRAYFISH is within the range of 25±0.5oC (with 70.8% MOLTING, 8.4% MORTALITY and 20.8% non-mortality and non-molting).
