Title

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN NOSOCOMIAL INFECTIONS AND NURSES’ WORK ENVIRONMENT

Pages

  44-50

Abstract

Introduction: NURSES have an important role in maintaining and improving standards of patients’safety. In this respect, the condition of NURSES’ workplace may influence theincidence of nosocomial infections and may endanger patients' safety. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between nosocomial infections and NURSES’ work environment. Methods: This descriptive - correlational study is conducted on 300 NURSES working in teaching hospitals in Tehran, Iran. The NURSES are selected through stratified sampling method. Data related to NURSES' workplace environment is collected by “Nurses Work Environment Index” (NWI). Its content validity is approved by 10 experts and Cronbach's alpha is measured by 30 NURSES. Data related to nosocomial infection is extracted from INIS software. Collected data is analyzed using SPSS.16.Results: The mean of nosocomial infections in the selected hospital is 3.47%, and urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common infection in the studied hospitals (39.7%). Pearson's correlation analysis showed that there is a significant negative correlation between each domain of NURSES' work environment and the incidence of nosocomial infection (P<0.05).Conclusions: This study shows that there is a negative correlation between NURSES' work environment and nosocomial infection. As such, to reduce the nosocomial incidence of infections in hospitals, it is suggested to implement programs to enhance this aspect.
