Abstract

Aim and Background: Anesthesia can change the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine factors during surgery. As a result of interference in the balance of these factors, it would increase the risk of cardiac and pulmonary disorders, high blood glucose levels with insulin resistance, impaired anesthesia process and damage to the patient’s health. The aim of this study was to investigate the pattern of serum IL-10 and TNF-a levels with two types of anesthesia in laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric surgery.Methods and Materials: 64 patients undergoing laparoscopic gastric bypass, referred to Rasoul-e-Akram Hospital, were selected randomly using block randomization and they were divided into two groups. After preoxygenation, anesthesia induction and patient intubation for maintenance of Anesthesia ISOFLURANE 1.2% was used in the first group, and in the second group 100 m / kg/ min PROPOFOL was used intravenously. Then in both groups, interluekin 10 and TNFa were measured by ELISA method.Findings: According to our results, the amount of IL-10 in both types of anesthesia was increased, but increased amount of IL-10 in the PROPOFOL group showed an unprecedentedly high level. The amount of TNF-alpha in the ISOFLURANE group was just a bit high, but it decreased in the PROPOFOL group (p<0.05).Conclusions: Intraoperative stress factors responsible for increased inflammation are such as TNF-a. The use of drugs like PROPOFOL may be helpful to reduce inflammation during surgery.
